FAQs

WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE WEEK OF TRAINING WEEK AT EUBC INVOLVE?

An average week of training for a senior at EUBC consists of 13 sessions. This includes 2 weights sessions, 2 ergs, 2 cardio sessions, 5 water sessions, a circuits session, and Pilates. Every week there is one recover day to promote rest and avoid injury.
For novices the programme is more flexible with around 7 sessions a week, some being optional.
Every Wednesday is our whole club social which sees a range of themes and games for every member of the club to take part in and have fun.

HOW CLOSE IS THE BOATHOUSE TO THE UNIVERSITY?

The Nicholas Bull Boathouse is only a 15 minute cycle from Streatham Campus. There is also a bus route and parking at the boathouse.
At the boathouse we have changing rooms, kitchen facilities and a crew area to keep warm and debrief after sessions.

CAN I JOIN IF I'VE NEVER ROWED BEFORE?

Yes, we have a great novice rowing programme of over 100 members. It will take you from having never rowed before to competing at BUCS events before the end of your first year. There is also the chance for outstanding novice rowers to compete for a place in one of our senior Henley Women’s Regatta or Henley Royal Regatta crews.

DO YOU HAVE A CUT-OFF?

No, at EUBC we will never cut athletes. We are open to and cater for rowers of all abilities and all aims.

HOW DOES TRAINING FIT AROUND LECTURES?

Circuits, water sessions and Pilates are all set time sessions; however, these are all placed such that they don’t interfere with most academic timetables. All other sessions such as ergs cardio and weights are all to be done in your own time to fit into your personal timetable. Ergs and cardio can also be done in our EUBC erg room located on Streatham campus by the sports park.

WHAT IS THE RIVER LIKE IN EXETER?

At EUBC we train on a 4.5km stretch of the Exeter Shipping Canal which is home to Exeter Spring and Winter Head, it includes a 1.5km straight which is used to pieces.
The shipping canal is non-tidal with no stream and high sheltered banks giving us the ability to train all year round without the worries of flooding.

WHAT BOATS DO EUBC TRAIN AND RACE?

At EUBC we have no separate sculling and sweep squads meaning that all athletes have the chance to do both giving us the opportunity to put out a huge range of boats. We have a long history of success in both lightweight and heavyweight categories from singles up to eights.

HOW DOES PRESEASON WORK?

Preseason tends to run the week before freshers week and all potential members of the senior squad are invited. It is a fantastic opportunity to integrate our new members with returning rowers. The week features a balance of training and socials with BBQ's, beach trips and club nights. Our freshers are hosted by returning senior rowers meaning there is no need to worry about organising accommodation.

DO YOU HAVE A TRAINING CAMP?

Yes, we usually run two training camps each year. The first is Winter Camp, usually held over a weekend in January or February and held within the UK. The second camp is Easter Camp, this is usually a week long camp held within the Easter break in the run-up to BUCS Regatta and the rest of the summer season.
